Initiating the call

Invoke pppd(8) with the name of the option file:
            % sudo pppd call umts

take a look at /var/log/messages to see whats going on

if things don't work, be sure to have 'debug' in pppd option file (and also enable the debug output for syslog!)

"No network protocols running"
